Summer Open Wrap

The 35th Flinders Golf Club Summer Open was played on Sunday 3rd December. The 36 hole annual event held for single figure male competitors, is hosted by the Flinders Golf Club, but also part the Golf Victoria’s year long Ivo Whitton Competition.

Despite the states weather forecasters and their dire predictions, the event went ahead as planned.  The worst of the conditions were in the morning, where players were forced to contend with with some extreme south westerly winds and rain, which made scoring extremely difficult. Lukas Michel (Metropolitan GC) handled the weather well, with a fine 74, to hold a handy four shot lead from Harry Smiles (Peninsula GC), 78, and Darren Makin (Eastwood GC), 79, a shot further back.  These were the only three players in the field to break 80, which is a testament to not only the conditions, but the fact that Flinders is no push over, for even the best players.

There was a little bit of respite for the afternoon round, with the rain and wind easing slightly, but this didn’t make the task at hand any easier.  The scoring improved,  and overall runner up in the event Mitch Rosam from (Eastern GC), was the standout, with a fine 68, from Lukas  Michel, 70, who played consistently all day.  As the weather improved, the scoring did – there were 14 in the field who broke 80 in the afternoon.

The overall winner of our 2017 Summer Open was Lukas Michel (pictured left) off a handicap of +5, posting gross scores of 74 and 70, to win comfortably, 4 strokes clear of  Mitchell Rosam.  The leading Flinders member was former Club Champion, who has been in a bit of form of late, Rob Curic, who finished a creditable 7th, with rounds of 81 and 76, well done Rob.

Congratulations Lukas and all the competitors playing in the event. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time to produce another great event at the Flinders Golf Club.  See below for a list of prize winners from the day, and a full field results sheet can be found HERE
