Message from the President

Dear Members,

The Chief Medical Officer in Victoria yesterday amended two Directives as of 30 March which has caused some speculation in golfing circles as to whether there is scope to re-open our courses specially since this has occurred elsewhere in Australia.

The relevant, Restricted Activity Directive, originally prohibited the operation of recreational facilities, both indoor and outdoor, except in prescribed circumstances.  Golf was not exempted and therefore courses had to close.  The revised update reverses the way outdoor facilities are defined and only brings within the scope of recreational facilities certain prescribed activities.  Golf is not one of them, hence the speculation that golf courses could re-open in Victoria subject to distancing rules and only two players teeing off at a time.

However, on 2 April Golf Australia reiterated its advice that golf courses should remain closed as it views golf as a non-essential activity in keeping with the Stay at Home Directive.  It however recognised that health authorities in different states may have different interpretations, which has allowed courses in South Australia, ACT, and NSW to operate.

Today, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer stated that a number of activities would be restricted, and specifically mentioned golf, and urged Victorians to refrain for looking for loopholes.

Therefore, at this time the course will unfortunately, remain closed.

We do hope that you are keeping well in this difficult time, and hope that we see you back at the club for a game of golf when we are permitted to do so.  In the meantime, keep an eye on the club website and social media platforms for regular updates on our course access, as well as some other interesting and entertaining pieces that have been put together by the team.  There will be something for everyone, including some specially created golfing tips from Josh.
