Standing On The First Tee – By Will Gregory (Aged 11)

As we drove through that beautiful old gate,
It felt so good, like someone had just served me a pudding like sticky date.
I was so pleased,
To see the course playable, I was almost a bit relieved.
Finally the course had opened and we were free to play,
No more making my own chipping complexes every single day.
Eventually, for what seemed like an eternity, we found a parking space,
By this time you really couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
The moment we stopped I jumped out,
Trying to hold back from screaming and having a shout.
The boot opened quickly and I ran to get my gear,
I hadn’t done this for what felt like a year.
Putter, irons and woods,
They all like my precious, precious goods.
Making sure not to let them bang and clang,
I walked fast and calmly while I sang.
Our tee off time was at four o clock,
Before that though, I wanted a choc!
The group in front of us has just hit their shots,
By now, my stomach felt like it was in knots.
I strolled onto the practice putting green,
At this stage, I felt like I was in a make believe movie scene.
Seeing how I putted I knew I was going to be a bit rusty,
With the putter in hand, I couldn’t be too trusty.
After a while of putts lipping out,
Playing like Tiger Woods today was out of the question, no doubt.
Today was going to be about having fun,
Like coming off the 18th green as if you had just won.
