Leigh Yanner’s Great Round

Published on 2nd February 2021 in Golf News, Local and Member News, Local News, Members News, Uncategorized

Last weekend, some of our members were lucky enough to witness one of the greatest games of golf ever played at The Flinders Golf Club.

This feat was made even more remarkable by the fact that the game was played not in a major board event, or a Pro-Am competition, but in one of the ordinary weekly stableford competitions at the club.

The player in question, arguably our best golfer, was Leigh Yanner, who last Saturday recorded a gross score of 64 off the stick, playing off a handicap of 2, for 43 stableford points.

Even more remarkably, Leigh’s score included three bogeys, on holes that he regularly plays to par!

Laird Gordon, who was one of the three members playing with Leigh on the day, was moved to write to the club to say:

“ His driving was amazing all day, into and against the wind, his approach shots were outstanding, which allowed him to do some of the best putting I have seen. All three of us who saw this were very privileged and didn’t mind our games but felt we all had seen something very special which we will never forget”

Leigh, who joined at Flinders in 2005, has represented our club in many Senior Pennant Competitions, and has twice won the Annual Club Championship (2013 and 2014).

In addition to being a member at Flinders, Leigh is Course Manager at The National Golf Club where, because it is also his place of work, he says he does not play as many rounds as he would like!

Typically, he made light of his incredible achievement, and when it was suggested to him that his round was one of the best seen here on our course, he just laughed and said:

“the ball just seemed to do the right thing each time and go into the hole”.

Most of us can only dream of playing with golf balls such as that!

From all of us here at Flinders Leigh – Congratulations! What a round! We look forward to seeing many more great scores from you in the years to come!
