New Members Cup Wrap Up

On Friday 12th March, the Flinders Golf Club held its annual New Members Cup, an event recommenced in 2019 after a lapse of almost ten years, the forerunner of what is intended to be an annual fixture held in November. The delay in the 2020 event until March this year was due to the covid pandemic.

The event, which is Ambrose, played in teams of four, from a shotgun start over 9 holes, is open to all new members who have joined the club within the previous 12 months, and was very well patronised this year, with 64 players competing for the trophy, on a beautiful sunny day. This gave plenty of time for people to get to know each other both on the course and in the clubrooms afterwards.

The club has taken its new members initiatives to new heights in recent months, through its various “New to Golf” programs and events, all of which are based on the principles of mentoring, friendship and fun.

Josh Shaw, FGC Professional, provides the high-level coaching for new members, supported by a group of volunteers who partner with new members as “buddies” right from the time that they hit their first golf balls through to their participation in events such as this.

The New Members Cup is structured in exactly the same way and, of the 64 players who competed on the day, 14 were longer term members who captained 14 of the 16 teams that competed.

The winning men’s team was captained by Chris Hosking  and included Stephen Ryan, Duncan Fischer, and Stewart McAuley. The men’s runners-up team was captained by Peter Gerdsen and included David Lindner, a “Pathways”  graduate, Paul Curtin, and John Lever.

The winning women’s team was captained by Fiona Reed, and included Bryony Topliss, Anna Mezger, and Deb Goodrich. The women’s team were in fact the overall winners on the day, beating the men’s best team in the final result!

The women’s  runners-up team was captained by Julia Low and included Debbie Lever, Jenny Richards, and Celia Davies, all of whom are “Pathways” graduates.

Not only did Julia captain her team to such a successful result, but in the process was able to score a hole in one on the 12th, a remarkable effort. Well done Julia!

The day was celebrated in the clubhouse after the game with drinks and nibbles, a welcoming address from Club President Jeff Smith, and the announcement of the winners.

Jeff was keen to point out in his address that the spirit in which games are played, and the camaraderie that exists at our club, is much more important than individual results. People play not just to do better, and sometimes to win in events, but most importantly to make new friends.

A great deal of positive feedback was received on the day, and our club has once again lived up to its reputation as a very welcoming and friendly club.

Congratulations to all the winners, and to all those who took part in what was a very successful day.
